Chapter 1: Strength blooms, where peace is planted.

A crack of thunder in the distance. The sound ripples through the tunnel. Ears up, a tired panther called Shadow lay his weary head; he knows to hide. He feels the vibration crackle—that deep bass. Is he shivering from cold or fear? Drip, drip, drip. He notices a seedling in the cracks, watching as the droplets hit it. He thinks: “We are alike, little buddy.” The clouds move overhead, and the water drips closer to him this time. He does not pounce oh no it is not the time to play. He assesses two living, breathing things just trying to survive where people say they can’t.
He realises his depressed thoughts are not helping. He knows the strength is in him. Alone, he remembers he is a Melanistic leopard; if you looked hard at him, you would see his spots. Yet, he was gifted as an “exotic illegal”—an immigrant with a gene that made him stronger, better, more able. He was black and proud to be that way. He remembered a “hu-man” once called him, with admiration: “A luxury sporty number.” He had roared loudly at him in disgust at his cage, which had just excited the hu-man more. He had escaped due to the cage door being open and a window being ajar—a tight squeeze, admittedly, He considered the hu-man as a “meal deal,” but then decided freedom was better.

The rain he thought he had avoided was now annoying; it had definitely become a hindrance. It was no longer just dripping on the seedling but had penetrated the tunnel roof above where he lay. A direct droplet fell to his head—a direct splatter. It progressed to his side, rolled to his chin, and then dripped dramatically to the floor. He remembered that he had hid in this tunnel to avoid hu-mans with monsters made of metal; he was living in the wetlands now. All he wished for was peace. All he got was wet. He lacked energy, but his heart was still pumping.
