SHADOWS JOURNEY. CHAPTER 1 – Day 8
Ears pricked, he slowly lowered his level. He froze because of one particular sound: the click of a clipboard.
Ah, never mind—a sweeter smell was slowly seeping up his nostrils, making his nerve endings tingle. It was not “hu-man”; it was a tastebud-lover’s scent. Sour ants and earthy, low-level creepy-crawly eaters. The scent of crushed leaves lingered because nothing was moving to disturb it.
Shadow was feeling optimised for perchance a hunt. He hadn’t worried about food for days, but now he was hungry. Not “alligator hungry”—that was too dangerous, and he would have to leave his hiding spot in the woods to go to the riverbank.
No, he wanted something easy. An armadillo. A cheap catch on an animal completely non-expectant of a prowling “illegal.” But he did not feel like an “illegal”; he felt like Shadow, a Prince of the Wilderness. Only his Princess was away from him right now. He became distracted a little, thoughts—I must control my thoughts.
