SHADOWS JOURNEY. CHAPTER 1 – Day 9
The armadillo continued to play in the leaves, totally unaware of the danger hidden so close. “I could reach out and touch it.” He looked like a monument to the bizarre, the world; it held its breath, suspended in that uneasy tension where reality threatens to fracture.
Looking at this meal was like looking at the absurdity of flesh. He did not speak; he thought this best. It was entirely for the best that he remained predictably mute, for if the mundane things in our lives—like a greasy Big Mac from a service station—were to stand on two legs and voice their grievances to the heavens above us, a man would find himself arguing the ethics of humanity with his lunch. And so, he merely existed to panther, letting the rustle of leaves tell whatever dark secrets he wanted.
“That’s enough chat in here.” Shadow crept from the leaves, now ever closer to the armadillo.
The smells, the sound—it all concluded in one result. Power and authority were here, but not solely his in the woods, and that could only mean the hu-man cages again. The only thing to do at this point was to sneeze.
After the nose tickle, the noise had caused the armadillo to take evasive action. This took the shape of a small runaway; it stopped and turned into a football. The armadillo then lent his body weight and rolled. Shadow continued to follow and was just about to grab the ball-shaped shopping list when he realised there was an insignificant sting in his rear.
He had heard a thwack sound, then this sting.
